View Full Version : A Treat from Japan: Rockin' On

I was able to score a back issue (July 04) of Rockin' On in a music store in Osaka, Japan, while I was following the Pageant Tour there. According to my Japanese friend, it is Japan's most popular music magazine.

I only scanned the images and not the article, which is, of course, written in Japanese.

Most of the photos were treated as a spread, so you have to piece the two scans to create the single image. The last item is a postcard that was packaged with the magazine.

ok, apparently this is kanji so it's been a real challenge trying to find a friend that knows this. however, the cover page goes like this:

"Coming back from 5 years!"
"the beastie boys!"
"british most fashionable music page 22!"
"prince comes back completely!"
"imported disk problem"

..sorry, that's all the skinny i received to get so far.. i'm going to see if my people can get the rest of it real soon. so stay tune.

much love and peace people!

yo, miramanee, nice work - is Mike D showing off that dance of his in the fourth pic down? just after the split spread? had you come up with a name for it yet?

No, I don't think he's dancing in that pic. It looks to me like he's about to Godzilla-attack Horovitz.

Regarding the name of the dance we've been discussing elsewhere on the board: it's been referred to as the Bhangra dance, but I'm not sure that's proper. I've been calling it the name that Wints came up with: Mike's Special Dance. :D

Does anyone know Izzy Stradlin from guns n roses? Ad Rock looks sooo much like Izzy in the photo ("Back in the days") where he's holding a plastic cup.

Hi,I am a japanese.I tried to translate the article on "4.jpg".
I don't have any confidence in my English.Sorry.
-4.jpg-
--(START)--
what is Rock'n Roll?what is HIpHop?what is art?what is Pop music?
every artists are always at a loss about those basic question,
but Beastie boys have ever show us definite answers.
their original 5 albums for 20 years
were Rock albums had a tremendous impact on music scene of the world,
genuine hiphop by the originator,
alive art form from the street,
and top-ranking pop music.
Besides,they were funny,fashionable and
funky textbook filled full of wisdom of the street.
And Now,2004 with an oppressive mood,
our hero, beastie boys will release a new album after an interval of five years.
The title is "To the 5 boroughs".
This album is dedicated to NYC composed of 5 boroughs,
and very satisfying answer to wandering Pop music scene.
Beastie Boys, they respect their roots, speak their mind,
and they are not afraid of trying, and powerful, full of ideas, and always creative.
The first thing their atitude is playing(writing) music as they like.
They give off their many assertion on "To the 5 Boroughs",
because the world we live,is going bad,we can't lead our life as we want.Pop music is going bad, too.
Beastie Boys, love child of Punk music( crush bourgeois rock with 3code of guitar and spirits of "Do It Yourself" )
and Hiphop music(brought music back to the streets with mic and turntables) show us their roots on this album.
---(END)----
Love and Peace!

ok sorry this took awhile but yo!!!... it was mad tough to figure out! so correct me if this is wrong.
and big shout outs to my boys Hiroki and Tamapla for the help.
translated verse:

What is the Rock? What is a Hip Hop? What is the Pop music?
The Beasties have always gotten answers about themselves that is looked for and thought by all artists.

After 20 years from which they debut, they have sold 5 original albums that can be called rock albums. These disks have shaken the music scene and yet at the same time, they are hip hop originators of the living art form from the streets. Their hip hop style has topped ranking charts of the pop music chorea.

They have added sayings, which is funny, fashionable, funky and intelligence to the hip hop bible that we hear today on the streets.
And now, being a heavy time in 2004, they released their new album. The title is “To the 5 Boroughs” which dedicated to NYC.

They don't lose their roots by trying to do new powerful things. They say what they want to say clearly and creative by doing whatever they want do. Which is something hard to do in todays mainstream generation.

One answer the pop scene won’t find from them is 3 chords of a guitar. The DO IT YOURSELF spirit knocks down the boroughs and that is Punk. By using only turntables and microphone to create music to street scene, the Beasties and this album shows their roots to the world.

ok, i'm late on this.. someone else did that too
uh..well.. g-nite

"the beastie boys are the group that is unparalleled because they have various sides for their bottomless random, fun, cool, real, and seriousness.
new york city brought it up? or, they cultivated it by themselves when they were hard-core punk rock? you will know the biography of each which tells you their charm and power."

thanks to my girl wabikaosabi for the translation!(y)
