Default "At Home With the Groovebox"

I mean as a concept/idea it was incredible but the final product...hmmmmm....I throw it on every couple of months and rarely feel the same way about it.
Mixed emotions I guess,I like the tracks by Buffalo Daughter,Beck,Pavement(best on the disc) and Sean Lennon. Alot of the stuff by the pioneers of electronic beats sometimes work and sometimes don't.
What really makes me curious is you had to know the Beasties had their hands on the groove box....what did they do with it? I mean "Countdown" sounds like it could have been done with just the 808 or a 909....what happened to the groove box and Tannis Root?

It's like "Bangzilla" for me in that sometimes I can hear it and other times I just don't dig it...

What do you think/know?

I remember totally looking forward to hearing the Groovebox album after about a year of rumors and hype. You can't go wrong with Cibo Matto, Air, Beck, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Sean Lennon, Buffalo Daughter, etc....but I felt let down after buying it. Some of the stuff is great....while others should have been told to submit something better. At least I have it on double vinyl.....

Color me green with jealousy! I'd be tempted to frame it...I know wax purists may cringe but Grand Royal vinyl looks so swank as wall art.....

The Sonic Youth "song" is the worst on the album.

Yeah..they didn't fuck around designing the Groovebox LP....it's one of the few gatefolds GR put out....

Mike D should have thrown Sonic Youth's submission in the trash....seriously...who can create a "song" like that and say to themselves..."Perfect. Sounds good to me....mail it to Grand Royal!"

Sure, but I think the spirit of the project was supposed to be non-judgemental and I mean from what I derive from the liner notes it sounds like it really was Tannis Root's baby and Grand royal was used to "maximize the potential and expand the scope of the project..."....besides I'm thinking if Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon submit a bit that really is composed from a medium somewhat foreign to them...well you go shit,Sonic Youth man!...how am I supposed to tell them what should sound like what? I'm prejudiced though,I just picked up "Sonic Nurse" in the 2nd hand bin and find it to be their best record to date.....you have to know somewhere on the shelf sit some Groove Box traks that Beasties,in particular D or Ad Rock screwed around with...I believe this cause "Simply Mortified" screams it....
