They use numbers, because usually it's young kids on their school machines and often they surf on sites where curse words are banned so they had to come up with ways to write those. Hence 5417 and #u(I<. oo I don't know how they really type those, but I noticed that you couldn't write "shit" on the Hives' forum.

I think it may have something to do with most internet geeks having fat saugage like fingers, so when they type, they end up hitting the wrong keys, or hit extra keys by mistake.
