Do you love or hate it?
I have found a new appreciation for it with movies like Collateral which has raised the standard for the entire genre. For a long time, I guess in the post-Die Hard days, the same movie was just being cloned with different mucho macho reluctant hero leading men. I really want to see Domino. I love the female leading roles that are popping up more and more in this genre. Also, there are a lot of "B" action movies that are really good for what they are. I caught one on tv yesterday called Back To Back. It was from '96 and starred Daniel Rooker-a very underrated actor. But I liked this low budget version of The Last Boy Scout better than most big budget '90's action blockbusters.

You should see The Rundown and Walking Tall. You'll thank me. I know this genre very well.

Action films are pretty bland. They may be fun to watch sometimes, but I prefer my slow and thought-provoking films.

Movies like Collateral are bringing a more thought-provoking element to action films.

I watch a lot of differnt types of film. I see no problem with dumbing down here and there for a good action flick.

Yeah, for every Eternal Sunshire of the Spotless Mind, or whatever it's called, that you watch, you gotta see a movie like T2.
For every Sideways, there's a XXX

Do you realize my point for this thread is that the genre is taking on a more intelligent approach? Like the wit in some of them, (the "B" one I mentioned), is very dry and satirical, not just corny one liners that you and the bad guys can miraculously make out over the sound of explosions and gunfire. And I have high hopes for Domino.

OK, fine. I forgot that this board is dominated by pretenscious pansyfied hipsters who pretend to be entertained by drama flicks about grown men crying over the fact that their mothers either spanked them too much or not enough and thus turned them into crossdressing bulemic shoplifters to authenticate their sensitve modern-male personas. Boofrigginhoo. Personally, all those artsy-fartsy films bore the crap out of me and I find myself praying for an explosion or for the zombies to show up and eat the leading actors.

there was this arnold movie on TV the other day, and we couldn't figure out what the hell it was. arnold was wearing a suit for most of it, and he barely ever killed anyone. even his wife got in more fights than he did. then there was a scene at the end where he wore a leather jacket and drove around in a car shooting people at a construction site with the rolling stones' "satisfaction" playing.
it sucked noodles, but at the same time i need to know what the hell it was

i like the action movies where you know how it will end up (its almost always too obvious) but its a wild ride to get there
even if the movie isnt all that great, i enjoy it when there are lots of unexpected twists and turns

I kind of quit seeing movies, so I haven't noticed a trend. I think that in the past there were always a load of crappy action movies and an occassional surprise where the movie really worked. I define the genre fairly broadly to include The Fugitive, Three Days of the Condor, and Marathon Man. But Running Man was great, so was the one with Sly Stallone and Sandra Bullock, I liked the Fifth Element -- I love when I see a movie and it's surprisingly good. I think Domino got a "D" from Entertainment Weekly. ![]() |

^Judge Dredd?? are you kidding? that was awful!
i'm not a big fan of action flicks. Collateral was really intense and i dug it, but other than that, meh. i'd prefer something that makes me think or makes me laugh until i pee.

I looked it up. Demolition Man. I remembered Bullock because it was the first thing I remember seeing her in and I thought, "I like her." I should have said Wesley Snipes. Denis Leary was in in too.
It looked like a pile of shit but I thought it was highly entertaining. I think that Sly is frozen or something a la Austin Powers and the future is in trouble because Snipes is a bad ass criminal who somehow escaped and in the future they have eradicated crime so the cops (Bullock) aren't capable of catching Snipes, so they thaw out Sly who teaches the future cops a thing or two about handling bad ass criminals. |

ahh that's what i meant. i get those two films confused sometimes. seeing as how they both involve sly and the future.
i love how they both have "virtual sex" so they can't catch any std's or anything and he goes "forget this" and does her and she's like "what the hell is this oh my gosh this sure is naughty"

and they both sucked.
Does Starship Troopers fall into action as well as Sci Fi or is there no crossing the beams? Cause that shit was better than people think. At least it was when I saw it years ago.

Granted, it's not a great movie, but it's a good movie by Sly's standards--the only one other than Rocky that I've ever liked. I didn't much like Copland (not an action movie).
It also had a great social message -- it's dangerous to eradicate criminals because then you might not be able to handle a super criminal. Kind of like what they tell us about antibiotic soap. |

The Last Kiss Goodnight
Die Hard The Last Boyscout That's the best three that came to mind just now. I'd consider Demolition Man more of a comedy to be honest... Another one came to mind but I forgot what it was ![]()

Yeah, The Long Kiss Goodnight was good. I agree that Demolition Man was more of a comedy, and I enjoyed it. I will definitely be checking for Doom...as a rental. First Blood was an awesome movie. I've probably seen it about 40 times now. Not in about 10 years, though.
